introduction

Within the space of a generation, addictive screens have radically changed childhood.

And whilst there are some benefits, the overwhelming story is one of harm, as childhood has been hijacked in the name of profit.

In this video, Dr Rob Archer argues there are 3 main sources of harm to children from addictively-designed screens and social media.

"As soon as a young person gets a smartphone, they also receive access to the largest library of pornographic images that has ever existed.”

the solution

'When you invent the ship, you invent the shipwreck'

Throughout history, humans have had to adapt to new technology as they learned about its benefits and harms.

It took a century to stop putting children up chimneys, decades to put seatbelts in cars and it was not until the 60s that the marketing of cigarettes to children was curbed.

We now need to do the same with addictive screens.

It is clear that Big Tech will not regulate themselves, governments cannot be relied upon and so it is up to parents to shift norms around smartphone use.
